MAPAMED (MArine Protected Areas in the MEDiterranean) is a GIS database that gathers information on marine protected areas of the Mediterranean, and more generally on sites of interest to the conservation of the marine environment.
MAPAMED data are validated by all the Focal Points for Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity (SPA/DB) of the SPA/RAC, the centre coordinating the implementation of the SPA/DB Protocol of the Barcelona Convention. As a result, the sites included in the database are only those of the 22 Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Slovenia, Spain, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, Turkey and the European Union.
The development of MAPAMED arose from the need to have a resource center collecting and structuring information on Mediterranean MPAs.
MAPAMED was updated in 2016. It is viewable for now on SPA/RAC Mediterranean Platform on biodiversity and through a simple visualisation tool on MedPAN website.
Please contact the MedPAN or SPA/RAC secretariats if you wish to have access to the datasets.
